South Yarra ranks as one of Melbourne’s most liveable suburbs. Conveniently located just 5kms from the CBD, this cosmopolitan enclave offers no shortage of fantastic restaurants, boutique fashion stores and trendy cafes. Below, we offer our top tips for living it up in South Yarra.
A place to dine – France-Soir
South Yarra’s dining scene is nothing if not a gourmet procession through classic French cuisine. And at the top of the list is France-Soir, a Melbourne stalwart that has been offering the true flavours of France for over 30 years. Classic French dishes such as snails and pissaladiere, entrecôte, steak au poivre, and duck a l’orange are matched with a divine selection of French wines. Gallic bliss.
A place to enjoy great coffee – Two Birds One Stone
A favourite amongst locals and those who like to travel from further afield. With great single origin coffee, and a creative menu that balances both sweet and savoury, Two Birds One Stone is a must-go in the South Yarra café scene.
A place to grab opportunities – Melbourne’s inner city
One of South Yarra’s key selling points is its proximity to Melbourne’s CBD, the engine room of Victoria’s economy. More than half of Melbourne’s total economic output and the highest levels of employment growth are produced in Central Melbourne, which includes the CBD. Central Melbourne is set to become Australia’s largest business centre with jobs projected to grow from 435,000 in 2011 to almost 900,000 jobs by 2051[2].
A place to reconnect with nature – The Royal Botanic Gardens
Melbourne’s favourite oasis. When the sun is shining its beautifully manicured lawns are sprawled with sunbakers, picnickers and those simply seeking a break from it all. Outside the gardens, no matter the weather, Melbourne’s runners are never absent from the famous ‘Tan’ track.
A place to watch great battles – the MCG
The MCG, the home of Australian sport, delivers one of the best sporting soundtracks you can hope for: the roar of a passionate crowd. Although not actually located in South Yarra, the 20 minute walk to the ground along the Yarra River is beautifully picturesque. Whether it’s football during the winter, or cricket during the summer, the ‘G is a pivotal part of Melbourne life all year-round.
